FAQ

Questions? We've got answers.

Everything you need to know about how strayfiles works, syncs, and keeps your notes organized.

Do I need to move my files into a special folder?

Nope. strayfiles indexes files wherever they already live. Point it at ~/notes, ~/dev/docs, or any mix of folders. Your structure stays intact.

How does the opt-in system work?

Add a simple YAML frontmatter block to any Markdown file you want indexed. Files without it are ignored. You control exactly what's included.

What sync options are available?

Free tier: Git Sync (auto commit/pull/push). Pro tier adds Stray Cloud with end-to-end encryption.

Is my data private?

Yes. The free tier is 100% local — nothing leaves your device unless you choose GitHub Sync. Pro tier uses end-to-end encryption; we can't read your notes.

What platforms are supported?

Native macOS and Linux CLI support today, plus native iPhone and iPad app access with Pro. The App Store launch is currently in review.

Can I use strayfiles without an account?

Absolutely. The free tier requires no account, no signup, no cloud. It's fully local-first and works offline.

What happens if I edit the same note on two devices?

strayfiles uses UUID-based conflict detection with version counters. If conflicts occur, you'll get conflict copies — no silent overwrites.

How is version history handled?

Local snapshots are stored automatically. You can view diffs and restore any version, even without Git installed. Pro adds cloud-stored history.

What's the strayfiles.toml file?

A project-level config that defines which folders to scan, exclude patterns, and workspace presets. Place it at the root of any folder you want to index.

Is there a trial for Pro?

Eligible Pro accounts start with a 30-day free trial so you can test Stray Cloud before committing. Returning subscribers are charged immediately. Cancel anytime.
